Koh Chang: Jungle Island Close to Bangkok
Thailand's second-largest island — rainforest mountains, waterfalls and quiet beaches, reachable from Bangkok by road and ferry with no flight needed.
Mountains, caves, elephants and jungle trekking in Thailand's wild side.
Thailand protects around 20% of its land in national parks and reserves, and they are far better than most visitors realise — wild elephants and gibbons in Khao Yai, limestone karst and marshland at Khao Sam Roi Yot, cloud forest on Doi Inthanon, and marine parks across both coasts.
The green season is the underrated time to see them. Waterfalls run, the forest is at its most alive, and you will frequently have a trail to yourself.
A note on elephants: the genuine sanctuaries do not offer rides, do not have elephants performing or painting, and limit group sizes. Those are the ones worth your money, and there are good ones near Chiang Mai.

The cultural capital of the north — 300 temples, cool mountain air, ethical elephant sanctuaries and the country's best cooking classes.
Thailand's far north — the dazzling White Temple, the surreal Blue Temple, the Black House, and the point where three countries meet on the Mekong.
A small, bohemian town in the misty mountains of Mae Hong Son — hot springs, waterfalls, canyon sunsets, and the most relaxed few days you'll have in Thailand.
An easy shaded walk to a gentle waterfall full of soft-shelled turtles — plus Chanthaburi's gem market and colonial old town. Eastern Thailand's best surprise.
A surreal field of rock pools and stone channels carved by the Mekong in Ubon Ratchathani — exposed only in the dry season, and one of Isan's strangest sights.
