On the Gulf side of the country, Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island and one of its most relaxed beach escapes. Coconut palms still outnumber buildings across much of the island, and its calm, warm waters make it a favourite for families and couples alike.

What to do on Koh Samui

  • Chaweng & Lamai beaches — long stretches of soft sand and clear water.
  • The Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) — a 12-metre golden Buddha overlooking the sea.
  • Fisherman’s Village, Bophut — charming old wooden shophouses, dining and a famous Friday walking street.
  • Na Muang Waterfalls — jungle falls you can swim beneath.
  • Ang Thong National Marine Park — a breathtaking day trip to 42 emerald islands.

Because the Gulf and Andaman coasts have opposite weather, Koh Samui can be sunny when the west coast is rainy — handy for off-season trips.
