Koh Samui: Gulf Island Beaches & Calm

A lush tropical island in the Gulf — palm-lined beaches, a golden Buddha and the Ang Thong marine park. And a season that's the opposite of Phuket's.

Koh Samui sits on the Gulf side of Thailand, and that single geographic fact should shape your planning more than anything else on this page: its season is the opposite of Phuket’s.

Beyond that, it’s the country’s second-largest island and one of its most likeable — coconut palms still outnumber buildings across much of the interior, the water is calm and warm, and you can drive the whole ring road in two hours.

The beaches

Chaweng — The long main beach on the east coast: soft sand, clear water, and everything you might need immediately behind it. Busy, and the centre of the island’s nightlife.

Lamai — Chaweng’s slightly quieter neighbour, with a good beach and a more relaxed strip of restaurants.

Bophut — Home to Fisherman’s Village, a genuinely charming row of old wooden shophouses turned into restaurants and boutiques, with a Friday-night walking street. Shallow, gentle water.

Choeng Mon — The north-east corner. A curved bay with calm shallow water, and the best beach on the island for small children.

Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, Bang Kao — The west and south. Sunsets over the water, very few people, and not much to do — which is the point.

What else to do

The Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) — A 12-metre golden seated Buddha on a small connected islet in the north, visible on the flight in. Free, brief and worth the stop.

Wat Plai Laem — Nearby and, we’d argue, more interesting: a white 18-armed Guanyin over a lake full of fish, in a genuinely beautiful setting.

Na Muang waterfalls — Two falls in the jungly interior. Na Muang 1 is a five-minute walk from the road; Na Muang 2 is a proper 30-minute climb to a much better payoff.

Ang Thong National Marine Park — The highlight. Forty-two limestone islands rising out of the Gulf, with an emerald inland lake reached by a steep climb, kayaking, and snorkelling. A full-day trip, ฿1,800–2,800 per person, and easily the best day out from Samui.

Secret Buddha Garden — A hillside of stone figures built by a durian farmer over decades. Odd, atmospheric, and reached by a rough track that needs a 4WD or a driver.

Koh Phangan and Koh Tao

Samui is the gateway to two very different neighbours, and most people who come for a week visit at least one.

Koh Phangan — 30–45 minutes by ferry. Famous for the Full Moon Party, which is a small part of what the island is; the north and east coasts are beautiful, quiet and full of small resorts. Check the moon calendar, in whichever direction suits you.

Koh Tao — Another 1–1.5 hours on. The cheapest place in the world to get scuba certified, with superb snorkelling straight off the beach.

Practical notes

  • Check the season first. October and November are Samui’s wettest months. Season guide →
  • Flights are the expensive part. Consider Surat Thani plus the bus-and-ferry combination if budget matters more than time.
  • Grab coverage is limited here — the local taxi association is well established and fares are fixed and high. Renting a car or scooter is common; the ring road is easy, the interior tracks are not.
  • Sandflies are a real nuisance on some beaches at dawn and dusk. Repellent works.

Surat Thani: common questions

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?

February to April and July to September. Koh Samui is on the Gulf coast, which runs on a different cycle to the Andaman — its wettest, roughest months are October and November, exactly when Phuket and Krabi are at their best. Booking Samui for early November is one of the most common Thailand planning mistakes.

Is Koh Samui expensive?

Day-to-day costs are similar to Phuket. Getting there is where it's more expensive — Samui's airport is privately operated with very limited competition, so flights typically run ฿2,000–5,000 more than the equivalent Phuket route. The cheap alternative is flying to Surat Thani and taking a bus and ferry, about five hours door to door.

Which beach is best on Koh Samui?

Chaweng for the long lively main beach with everything on it. Lamai for a slightly calmer version. Bophut and Choeng Mon on the north coast for shallow, gentle water that suits small children. Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam on the west for sunsets and genuine quiet.

Is Koh Samui good for families?

Yes, particularly the north coast. Choeng Mon and Bophut have shallow, sheltered water, the island is small enough to drive round in two hours, and there's much less to overwhelm you than in Phuket. What you give up is rainy-day options — there simply aren't many.

How do you get from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao?

Frequent ferries all day. Samui to Phangan takes 30–45 minutes and costs ฿300–500; Phangan to Koh Tao is another 1–1.5 hours at ฿500–800. It's a natural three-island chain and one of the easiest island routes in Thailand.

Is Koh Samui too touristy?

Chaweng is developed and the ring road has plenty of the usual island commerce. But Samui is bigger than people expect, and the south and west coasts stay genuinely quiet. It's less built up than Phuket overall, though the gap narrows every year.
