If you only see one waterfall in Thailand, make it Erawan. Inside Erawan National Park in Kanchanaburi, a clear stream tumbles down seven tiers of brilliant turquoise pools, framed by limestone and jungle. The top tier is said to resemble Erawan, the three-headed elephant of Thai mythology — hence the name.
Climbing the seven tiers
A well-made trail follows the falls upward. The first few levels are an easy stroll; the upper tiers get steeper and more adventurous, rewarding you with quieter, more dramatic pools.
- Tiers 1–3: easy, family-friendly, with the most popular swimming pools.
- Tiers 4–5: the classic postcard pools — bright emerald water you can swim in.
- Tiers 6–7: steeper and wilder, with far fewer people.
The little fish in the pools give gentle, ticklish “spa” nibbles — totally harmless and a fun surprise for first-timers.
Pair it with history
Kanchanaburi is also home to the Bridge over the River Kwai and the moving WWII Death Railway museums. A two-day trip lets you combine the region’s natural beauty with its powerful history.
Make it easy
The drive and park are simple with the right plan. We arrange a van + driver from Bangkok, an early start to beat the heat, and an optional overnight by the river. Plan your Kanchanaburi trip →
