Thailand has hundreds of islands, and choosing between them is half the fun — and half the confusion. This guide breaks it down simply, so you pick the islands that match the trip you actually want.

First, choose your coast

Southern Thailand has two coastlines with opposite weather:

  • Andaman coast (west): Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Lanta, the Similans. Best November–April. Dramatic limestone cliffs and clear water.
  • Gulf coast (east): Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao. Best February–September. Calmer, palm-fringed, great for diving.

Pick the coast whose season matches your dates — then choose islands within it.

Match the island to your vibe

  • Lively with everything on tap: Phuket — beaches, nightlife, and a launch pad for day trips.
  • Dramatic scenery & adventure: Krabi and Railay — cliffs, climbing, and the famous Four Islands tour.
  • Relaxed and lush: Koh Samui — palms, calm beaches, family-friendly.
  • Diving & backpacker buzz: Koh Tao — the cheapest place in the world to learn to scuba dive.
  • Close to Bangkok: Koh Chang on the east coast — jungle and quiet beaches, no flight needed.

A simple sample route

  1. Fly into Krabi, base in Ao Nang, do the Four Islands and Railay.
  2. Boat to Phi Phi or Koh Lanta for a few nights.
  3. Finish with a couple of slow days on a quieter beach.

Don’t try to see too many islands. Two or three, with time to actually relax on each, beats a rushed boat marathon.
