Phanom Rung: Thailand's Khmer Temple on a Volcano

A breathtaking 1,000-year-old Khmer temple crowning an extinct volcano in Buri Ram — Isan's answer to Angkor Wat, and gloriously crowd-free.

Long before the modern Thai kingdom, this land was part of the great Khmer Empire — and Phanom Rung is its most beautiful surviving monument. Built of pink sandstone on top of an extinct volcano over 1,000 years ago, this Hindu temple rivals anything in Cambodia, yet sees only a fraction of the visitors.

Why it’s special

  • A dramatic approach — a grand promenade and naga (serpent) bridges lead up to the sanctuary.
  • Exquisite carvings — lintels and pediments depicting Hindu gods, including the celebrated Phra Narai (Vishnu) lintel.
  • The solar alignment — on about 15 days each year, the rising or setting sun shines straight through all 15 doorways in a line. These dates draw a joyful local festival.

Pair it with Muang Tam

Just down the hill, the Prasat Muang Tam temple with its lotus-filled ponds makes a perfect second stop. Together they’re the highlight of any trip into deep Isan.

This is Thailand off the tourist trail — bring sun protection and expect warm, genuine local hospitality.
