For 400 years, Ayutthaya was the dazzling capital of the Kingdom of Siam — one of the largest and richest cities in the world, until it was destroyed in 1767. Today its red-brick temples, towering prangs and serene Buddha statues form a UNESCO World Heritage park you can explore in a single, unforgettable day from Bangkok.

Don’t-miss temples

  • Wat Mahathat — home to the famous Buddha head entwined in the roots of a fig tree, one of Thailand’s most photographed sights.
  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram — a magnificent riverside temple complex, stunning at sunset.
  • Wat Phra Si Sanphet — three iconic bell-shaped chedis that once stood in the royal palace.
  • Wat Lokayasutharam — a huge reclining Buddha out in the open air.

Make a day of it

The historical park is flat and compact, so many visitors rent a bicycle or hire a tuk-tuk for a few hours to loop between the ruins. Combine it with a stop at a floating market or a riverside lunch on the way back.

Ayutthaya’s ruins are most magical in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon — and far cooler, too.
