Pattaya is the fastest sand from Bangkok — two hours by road, and you can be on a beach by lunchtime.
It has a reputation, and parts of it earn that reputation comprehensively. But the wider area is much more varied than the reputation allows: an island with genuinely clear water, one of Thailand’s strangest and best buildings, big landscaped gardens, and family resorts along a perfectly normal beach.
Koh Larn — the reason to come
Koh Larn (“Coral Island”) sits 45 minutes offshore by public ferry (฿30 from Bali Hai pier) and has the clear water Pattaya itself doesn’t.
Six beaches ring the island. Tawaen is the main one, busy and fully serviced. Samae is the pretty one. Nual (“Monkey Beach”) and Tien are the quiet ones and take a bit more effort to reach. Rent a scooter or take a songthaew between them.
Go on a weekday if you can — Thai weekend crowds are substantial.
On the mainland
Sanctuary of Truth — Genuinely extraordinary. An enormous hand-carved wooden temple on the seafront, entirely without nails, covered inside and out in sculpture drawing on Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Indian religious traditions. It has been under construction since 1981 and is still not finished, which is part of the point. ฿500, and worth every baht.
Nong Nooch Tropical Garden — 240 hectares of formal gardens, a cycad collection of international importance, cultural shows and elephant displays. Very popular with families.
Pattaya Viewpoint (Pratumnak Hill) — The classic panorama over the whole bay, best at sunset. Free.
Jomtien Beach — South of the centre, longer, calmer and much more family-oriented than Pattaya Beach itself. This is where most families stay.
Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Hill) — An 18-metre golden Buddha on the hill above Pratumnak, with a good view and very few visitors.
Where to stay
Jomtien — Families, quieter, a proper beach, good value. Wong Amat / Naklua — North of the centre, upmarket and calm. Central Pattaya — Convenient and lively; the Walking Street end is adults-only in character. Pratumnak — Between the two, on the hill, with the best views.
Choosing your area carefully is genuinely all it takes to have a completely different Pattaya holiday.
Onward from Pattaya
Pattaya is a good starting point for an eastern seaboard road trip — south to Rayong, on to Chanthaburi and Phlio waterfall, and out to Koh Chang near the Cambodian border. That’s a genuinely underrated route with almost no foreign visitors on it.
Practical notes
- Weekend traffic from Bangkok is heavy. Leave before 8am on a Saturday or you’ll add an hour.
- Jet-ski damage claims are a long-running scam here specifically. Photograph the machine thoroughly before you ride it, or don’t.
- Book Koh Larn ferries early in the day — the last public boats back fill up in the afternoon.
- Many people transfer straight from Suvarnabhumi and skip Bangkok on arrival. It’s about two hours.
